THINK VIRTUAL COURT IS CASUAL? WHY PROPER ZOOM CONDUCT MATTERS

Recent reports in Michigan have highlighted troubling behavior in virtual court sessions, including individuals allegedly driving or engaging in inappropriate personal activities while attending court by Zoom.  These incidents underscore an important point.  Attending court via Zoom is not a casual online meeting.  It is an extension of the courtroom.  All the rules, professional expectations, and decorum of an in-person hearing apply online.  Being virtual does not lessen your responsibility to be attentive, properly dressed, and respectful of the judicial process.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION RE: ATTENDANCE BY ZOOM VIDEO

Please review these rules carefully to ensure a proper virtual court experience:

  • Display your legal name when joining the Zoom hearing.
  • Be in a quiet location free from background noise and distractions.
  • Pay attention to the proceedings; do not walk around or leave your seat.
  • Do not have others in the room, including children, unless explicitly allowed.
  • Use a stable, flat surface for mobile devices at eye level; do not hold the device.
  • You should be seated at a table, not lying down.
  • Do not record, screenshot, live stream, or copy any part of the hearing.
  • Do not participate while driving or as a passenger in a moving vehicle.
  • Proper attire and conduct are required. Business casual is acceptable.
  • No eating, drinking, smoking, gum chewing, or wearing hats.

CONSEQUENCES OF MISBEHAVIOR

Misconduct during a virtual hearing is taken seriously and can lead to:

  • Removal from the hearing.
  • Contempt of court or fines.
  • Delays in your case or negative impressions by the judge.

TIPS FOR A PROFESSIONAL ZOOM SETUP

  • Lighting: Use natural or bright, even lighting so the judge can see you clearly.
  • Camera placement: Keep the camera at eye level to maintain proper eye contact.
  • Background: Choose a neutral, professional backdrop.
  • Documents: Have necessary documents nearby, but avoid shuffling them loudly.

WHY THIS MATTERS

Virtual court is a privilege that allows accessibility and convenience, but it carries responsibilities.  Following these rules ensures that proceedings remain professional, respectful, and fair for everyone involved. Misbehavior online can lead to sanctions and, more importantly, diminishes the dignity of the judicial process.

Whether attending in person or online, your behavior matters. Follow the rules, respect the court, and treat your virtual appearance with the same seriousness as an in-person hearing.
